Covalent products are unique for a number of reasons, but foremost because each product is crafted with our unique AirCarbon® biomaterial. We encourage you to learn more about AirCarbon by visiting our AirCarbon page on covalentfashion.com
-
AirCarbon is a material made by microorganisms found in the ocean. More specifically, microorganisms from the ocean covalently bond dissolved oxygen from air with carbon from greenhouse gas to make a meltable energy storage material called PHB: a molecule made in almost all known life on Earth, from algae to humans. We purify that material in a fine white powder and can then use it to replace plastic, acetate, fiber, and animal leather. Learn more HERE.
-
AirCarbon® Leather is currently composed of fifty-one percent AirCarbon by weight, and AirCarbon Resin currently consists of seventy-eight percent AirCarbon by weight. Synthetic and natural materials comprise the remaining weight. AirCarbon Leather contains dry natural rubber.
-
Yes, in addition to being a regenerative material, AirCarbon® Leather is also vegan and contains no animal components. The microorganism component of the AirCarbon production process is non-animal.
-
First and foremost, it is a material made by life: a material that connects us, and that requires no animals or food crops to produce. Second, by using greenhouse gas a resource, the production of AirCarbon is carbon-negative, meaning it results in a net reduction in the amount of CO2e in the air. That makes AirCarbon more than sustainable—it makes it regenerative, resulting in a net restoration to the environment.
-
If you ever decide to part ways with your Covalent product, send it back to us so that we can reform it into a new product and help keep its carbon sequestered.
-
The carbon footprint of all Covalent products are third-party verified through life cycle analyses carried out by SCS Global Services. The carbon footprint of AirCarbon® is third-party certified by a life cycle analysis carried out by Carbon Trust.
-
Currently, AirCarbon® Leather products are sourced, manufactured, and assembled in the United States.
Covalent eyewear uses AirCarbon Resin that is manufactured in the United States; AirCarbon Resin is shipped to Italy, where it is transformed into frames and assembled by expert artisans to create the highest quality finished eyewear possible.
The safety of our workers, fair wages and benefits, quality of workmanship, and minimizing the impact of our production on the environment throughout our entire supply chain are our manufacturing priorities.

Every day, microorganisms in the ocean take air and carbon from greenhouse gas dissolved in saltwater and turn it into a molecule called PHB inside of their cells. We figured out, over the course of seventeen years, how to replicate the process that occurs in the ocean and make PHB on land. To do this, we create conditions like the ocean in a large tank filled with saltwater, and feed natural microorganisms from the ocean the same nutrients they use in the ocean—salts, air, and carbon from greenhouse gas, such as methane and carbon dioxide—using renewable power. The net result: a material we call AirCarbon®, made through a biological carbon capture process.
-
The greenhouse gas to make AirCarbon can be sourced from both methane and carbon dioxide, including from farms, ethanol plants, landfills, abandoned coal mines, and direct air capture. Since methane traps 23 times more heat than carbon dioxide, we prefer to use methane. Over the years, we have used methane from dairy farm digesters and food waste digesters, as well as carbon dioxide from ethanol plants. Today, we buy renewable power from the power grid, and similarly we contract with an operator capturing methane emissions from an abandoned coal mine system, who captures the methane emissions, separates them from other gases, and injects them into the natural gas grid, by which they are then contractually delivered to us. We like this approach for both renewable power and sustainable methane delivery because it leverages existing scalable infrastructure.
-
We intentionally design our products to be upcycled. While our products are mostly composed of biodegradable materials, they are not biodegradable. We want to ensure that you enjoy your Covalent products for a long time. Once your product has reached the end of its life cycle, it can be returned to us through our circular return program, where it will be transformed into something new.
-
Covalent uses IBM-powered blockchain technology to help you track the specific carbon impact of your product. Onto each Covalent product is printed a unique 12-digit number, which represents the precise time that air and greenhouse gas were turned into the AirCarbon® within the product you are holding. We call it the Carbon Date. Type in your product’s Carbon Date anywhere you see the Carbon Date form (hint: it has six blocks arranged in a hex shape) or HERE to explore the steps that brought your product to life—from the moment we brought in greenhouse gases as food for our ocean microorganisms to the moment your Covalent product was ready to ship.
-
In the simplest terms, blockchain is a series of digital information inputs (the “blocks”) that are stored within a public database in a unique and unalterable sequence (the “chain”). Since the type and order of a blockchain is shared on multiple databases, it cannot be altered, because all of the other databases would recognize that alteration as misaligned with the original blockchain and prevent its acceptance. As such, a blockchain becomes a permanent ledger of information that is immutable, making it a safe and secure way to create identification data related to production provenance--that is, where something came from--since it cannot be changed.
-
Using blockchain enables us to affirm and communicate the specific carbon footprint associated with Covalent products with the highest level of accuracy.
-
For Covalent Gen Alpha eyewear, your Carbon Date is located on the outer right temple. It comes in a date format like this: Year.Month.Day - Hour:Minute:Second.
For Covalent AirCarbon® Leather products, your Carbon Date appears on the exterior of your product as a 12-digit hexagon-shaped stamp, which also follows the same clockwise order of Year, Month, Day, Hour, Minute, Second, starting in the bottom left position.
